The Vipava Valley is located in southwestern Slovenia, nestled between the Julian Alps to the east and the Karst Mountains, extending into the Italian Adriatic coast to the west. The Vipava River flows through the Vipava Valley—you might have guessed it already. This river originates in the medieval town of Vipava, centrally located in the valley. Seven springs there provide a permanent supply of water.
The Vipava Valley boasts a rich and diverse history. In ancient times, tribes and peoples already appreciated the fertile soil and favorable conditions in this region. In later times, the Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians all succeeded each other and left their mark on the region. Numerous castles, fortresses, and manor houses still reflect this rich aristocratic legacy. The combination of this diverse cultural history, the fertile soil, and the unique climate makes the Vipava Valley a truly fascinating culinary region.
As you drive through the hilly, almost Alpine Slovenian landscape, the Vipava Valley, with its microclimate, can be a strange sight. Within a relatively short distance, the landscape transforms into a Mediterranean postcard: rolling green forests alternate with vineyards, olive groves, and orchards of apricot, cherry, and peach trees.
Due to the circumstances, wine is the valley's most important product. The unique climate and the influence of the nearby Adriatic coast lend themselves perfectly to the production of high-quality wines, including several indigenous grape varieties such as Zelèn and Pinela.
If your taste buds have had enough, there are plenty of other things to do in the valley. You can enjoy beautiful hikes, go cycling, or venture off the beaten track on your mountain bike. Or head higher and paraglide to great heights, overlooking the valley and the Adriatic coast.
