Let’s start with the biggest event of 2022 and the reason behind this website: it’s the year we swapped the big Dutch city for a small village in Slovenia.
This wasn’t a decision we made overnight. We’ve traveled a lot and are always curious about other cultures, local food, and different perspectives on daily life. During our travels, we often wondered if we would trade our Dutch life for something new. Not because life in the Netherlands is bad, but because something else might suit us better.
There were always plenty of reasons not to do it—until we arrived in Slovenia. We instantly fell in love with the fairytale-like nature, the diverse landscapes, the people, the food, the wines. We both immediately felt that this was our place.
After our first trip, we visited Slovenia several times for longer periods of time. This allowed us to visit the different regions and explore which place would suit us best. In the end, the Vipava valley became our new home. A narrow valley sandwiched between the Italian coast and the impressive Trnovo plateau. The Vipava valley has a Mediterranean microclimate, beautiful nature, quaint villages, olive groves and vineyards.
Thanks to the climate and fertile soil, almost everything grows. With all this culinary wealth in the backyard, we can also go all out in the kitchen.
Friends from the Netherlands often ask us for travel tips for this area. And our friends from the next village, Irena and Matija, already had plenty of ideas for a website like Vipava Travel. With this website, we want to showcase the most beautiful places in the Vipava Valley. Irena and Matija bring their deep and local knowledge of the valley, while we offer a fresh perspective as newcomers.
Through Vipava Travel, we share our experiences, tips and adventures in and around the valley. There are so many beautiful places and charming local entrepreneurs to discover, but they are not always easy to find online. And this location is also the perfect base to discover the rest of Slovenia!
