In 2025, Nova Gorica and Gorizia will hold the title of European Capital of Culture. What makes this extra special? These are two neighbouring cities in Slovenia and Italy —Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy)— sharing a unique cross-border story.

A bit of history
Until World War I, this region was part of Austria and later the Habsburg Empire. After the war, the area was divided, with part of it becoming Italian and the other part joining Yugoslavia. Since Gorizia (Italy) and its services were no longer easily accessible to Slovenians on the other side of the border, the Yugoslavian president Tito initiated the construction of ’New Gorica’, or Nova Gorica. The idea was to create a spacious, green, socialist model city. While not all plans were realised, the contrast in architecture between the two cities today makes for a fascinating and unique experience.
Nowadays, with open borders, you can literally stand in two countries at once—for example, on Transalpina Square, also known as the “Borderless Square.” This square will be the main stage for the GO! 2025 celebrations. However, if you check this live webcam you’ll see there’s still some work to be done before it’s ready! 🙂

GO! 2025 Program
Even this summer, in the lead-up to 2025, plenty of events are already happening in both cities! Expect a mix of art, culture, film, music, theater, festivals, and—of course—amazing food and wine.
