Last weekend, our village hosted the Olive Oil & Wine Festival. Medals were awarded for the best olive oils, and let me tell you, the quality in our valley is top-notch!
Don’t expect a festival like you might be used to. Here, the focus is all on the products.
Wines
This time, there wasn’t just one grape variety in the spotlight, like the local Zelèn or Pinela. Instead, winemakers let visitors taste everything. Penina, a sparkling wine made in a similar way to Champagne or Crémand. But also rosé, white wines, interesting reds, and of course, the complex orange wines typical for this region. If you’re looking for small-scale, often organic or biodynamic winemakers —some still undiscovered— this is the place to be.
Olive oil
You probably know Italy, Greece, and Spain as classic olive oil countries. But did you know that Slovenia produces outstanding olive oil? In the north, a lot of pumpkin seed oil is produced (highly recommended!), but here on our Mediterranean coastline, we have the perfect conditions for olive oil. Packed with flavour, full of nuances, and super fresh. So if you’re in the area, make sure to visit an olive oil producer. Not sure where to go? Get in touch, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
