What is the best travel time for Slovenia?
Every season has its charm, so Slovenia is good to visit all year round. Although for us, the early and late season stand out. Especially the Mediterranean microclimate makes Slovenia's Vipava Valley a good base.
The period from April to November is ideal for nature, outdoor activities, visiting cities and the coast. July and August are the hottest and busiest.
The winter sports season runs from December to March.
Is Slovenia safe to travel?
Yes, Slovenia is one of the safest countries in Europe. Normal travel caution is sufficient; pickpockets can be active in the larger cities.
Do you need a vignette to visit Slovenia?
Yes, a digital vignette is compulsory for motorways. You buy it in advance online via the Official website of DARS or at official outlets such as petrol stations near the border.
Is Slovenia an expensive country?
Slovenia is less expensive than, for example, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. Food and hotels are affordable, but prices are naturally higher at tourist hotspots like Bled. Compared to the Netherlands, Slovenia is more affordable. Eating out and, for example, petrol prices are considerably lower.
Do they speak English in Slovenia?
Yes, in cities and tourist areas almost everyone speaks good English. If you are in a less touristy area, Slovenes are curious and very willing to communicate, so you will always get along!
How much time do you need for Slovenia?
For a good round trip, you can easily fill 7 to 10 days with various activities, landscapes and locations. Combine it with occasional trips to northern Italy, and you can easily fill 14 days. If you only want to see the highlights, 4 to 5 days is enough. Travelling through Slovenia is easy and the roads are good. This makes it easy to explore the rest of Slovenia from a fixed point.
Can you hike in Slovenia?
Yes, it is a top destination for hikers. From short family hikes to serious mountain treks, everything is possible. The landscape is very diverse, so you will never be bored!
What is public transport like in Slovenia?
Trains and buses connect the major cities, but count on longer journey times. From the border with Italy you can easily catch a train to the larger cities in northern Italy. Many natural areas are easier to reach by car.
What are typical Slovenian dishes?
- Štruklji - these are stuffed dough rolls, often steamed and they can be filled in either sweet or savoury ways.
- Prekmurska gibanica - this is a mighty cake with poppy seeds, nuts and apple.
- Idrijski žlikrofi - these are stuffed dumplings, or pasta pads with a potato filling.
- Honey - Slovenia is the land of honey.
- Local wines - there are many small-scale winemakers in Slovenia and each region has its own specialities and grape varieties. The wines are high quality and often organic or biodynamic.
Slovenian cuisine is a mix of Austrian, Italian and Balkan. Very diverse and because almost everything grows here, you often see seasonal produce on the menu.
What should I pack for a holiday in Slovenia?
- Good walking shoes or shoes with grip. Not all hiking trails are equally passable.
- Raincoat (weather can change quickly in the mountains).
- Swimwear for a dip in the sea, rivers or lakes.
- Warm layer for the evenings. In the mountains, it can cool even in summer. On the coast and, for example, in the Vipava Valley, the climate is milder.
Can you swim in Slovenia?
Yes - especially in lakes Bohinj, Bled and several smaller lakes. The water is clear and clean. But rivers and the Adriatic sea are also fine for swimming.
Are dogs welcome in Slovenia?
Generally speaking, yes. In nature parks, dogs often have to be on a leash. In restaurants, dogs are usually allowed. Accommodations vary, so check beforehand. Because of our own dog, other dogs are unfortunately not possible with us.
Is Slovenia suitable for children?
Yes. It is safe, clean, the distances compact, there is a lot of nature and there are many child-friendly locations and activities like the coast, lakes, cable cars and caves.
