What to do in and around the Vipava Valley
Slovenia is a great place to visit all year round, although the early and late seasons stand out in our opinion. Both in terms of culinary aspects and nature and climate. As we said before, the possibilities are endless. In our blogs we write about all the things to do in the Vipava Valley, for example walking, hiking, cycling, road cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, paragliding, daydreaming, visiting a winery, daydreaming even more about the view, good food... And there is plenty nearby. The Vipava Valley is the perfect base for exploring the rest of Slovenia and northern Italy. We take you along the hotspots within a maximum hour's drive. Area
Beach
The closest beach in Sistiana, Italy is 35 km away, about a 35-minute drive. Along the Italy’s coast all the way to Trieste you’ll find small harbours and promenades where Italians and Slovenians spend their summers. By the way, every year in October the international sailing regatta Barcolana is held here. If you prefer a sandy beach, Grado is the closest at 54 km, about a 50-minute drive. Definitely also recommended for kitesurfers! Slovenia also has very nice coastal villages and beaches, such as Koper or Piran. Nice to visit and combine with a refreshing swim!
It can be nice here early in the year and we especially seek out the beach in the late season. So in our opinion a recommendation from March to November!
Snow
The nearest area is 25 km away, about half an hour's drive. With a small slope more suitable for children, but the walks are beautiful in this area! If you want to go skiing for a day, there are several options in the area, both in Slovenia and Italy. Contact us for the possibilities.

Soca Rivier near the Solkan Bridge

Close to us, the Soca River flows from the Triglav Mountains. The water here is a little less cold, but just as beautiful turquoise. You can go ziplining here, Kayaking or other sporty activities. Or take a refreshing dip!

Vipava is the village in our valley where the river of the same name rises and where you can find a piece of history of this valley. Walk through the town and to the ruins of an old castle and drink a glass of local wine on the square.

Despite Venice being incredibly touristy, it remains a unique city and definitely worth a visit. Our tip: go off-season, take a day trip by train, and wander the streets without the hordes of tourists.
Accessibility
Slovenia is easily accessible by car or motorcycle, as the roads are good and you can easily travel from A to B. You will need a vignette for the motorways. You can buy a vignette at the border or through the website of official authorities.
It is becoming easier and easier to travel by train through Europe, but finding the right connection can sometimes be a challenge. We often check Seat61 for good tips and train connections.
In Slovenia the train is not the best means of transport, but you can make wonderful trips with it. For example, from Nova Gorica to the Triglav National Park, or to Lake Bohinj or the more touristic Lake Bled. You can also combine the train with wine in our valley. Check the winetrain!
