Fancy an evening of being thoroughly spoiled? At Bistro Grad Štanjel, you can enjoy delicious dishes and local wines from the region. During the summer, you can enjoy drinks, lunch, and dinner outdoors in the courtyard of the old castle. But in bad weather or during winter, the indoor atmosphere is just as charming, and you can enjoy the beautiful views. The village of Štanjel is located on a hilltop on the edge of the Karst mountains, overlooking the Vipava Valley, and the Bistro is one of our favourite restaurants.

The village of Štanjel
The medieval village has charming streets, several art galleries and in the castle you will also find a museum where you can learn more about this region. Wander through the small streets towards the Ferrari gardens, visit a gallery or the museum and combine it with a visit to the bistro. More information about the village can be found here.
You can also make beautiful walks through the surrounding nature. Some routes are signposted from the car park on the other side of the road, or check websites like Komoot to plan a route.

Attention and eye for detail. The decor, service, but especially the balance of flavours in the dishes stand out for us. In the evening, they serve a 4-, 5-, or 6-course dinner with a choice of fish or meat. During the day, à la carte is also available, and they serve various sharing platters.
We can describe the whole dinner in detail from start to finish, because we remember almost everything, it was all so delicious! But to avoid writing pages and pages and to keep it a bit of a surprise, we will highlight a few dishes. By the way, they cook with as many local and seasonal products as possible, so the dishes change regularly. This also applies to the wines. Many can be ordered by the glass and you can also opt for a matching wine pairing.

We started with a red sparkling wine made from the local Teran grape. This grape has traditionally been grown in the Karst region, has a deep red colour and is known for a full body without being heavy. It's very nice to try a sparkling wine made from it, as you wouldn't really expect that from this grape. This was followed by a white wine from Pietra, also from the local area, and then we had a red wine from Fedora from the Alda collection. This red wine is made from the Pokalca grape, an almost forgotten grape variety from the region from which Fedora has made a very nicely balanced wine.
Clear the dishes. The strawberry gazpacho really stood out. The flavours of strawberry, tomato, cucumber and pepper are so beautifully balanced and the texture is velvety smooth. Truly summer on a plate. The black gnocchi with squid and wild garlic cream was also a feast of flavours. So well-matched that nothing dominated and you wouldn't want to leave a single drop. And we could go on like this for a while, but it's best to experience it for yourselves!
A delightful evening out, completely immersed in local produce in a beautiful setting.
