Walking along the Hubelj River

The Hubelj River rises from a trio of caves a few hundred meters above the town of Ajdovščina (pronounced "Out of China," as local brewery Pelicon has named one of its beers). You can enjoy beautiful walks, cool off, have a bite to eat or drink at the local "Gostilna," or visit the local Pelicon brewery.

During or after heavy rainfall, this creates spectacular waterfalls and a fine mist, which attracts many visitors.

At the Gostilna, you can enjoy typical Slovenian dishes at a reasonable price, and in summer they have a lovely terrace near the waterfalls. Be sure to check the opening hours, as many restaurants are closed on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays. Along the way, you'll also find plenty of spots for a picnic or a break to enjoy the scenery.

This is often also the starting point for hikes to higher areas and mountain peaks.

This area can offer some relief during the warm summer months, although the waterfalls are most spectacular after recent rainfall. So, it's definitely recommended even outside the summer season!

A nice circular walk, also recommended for children who like a challenging walk, can be found on the website of Vipava.

At the parking lot below, you'll find the Pelicon brewery, which brews beer using water from the Hubelj. At the top, you can enjoy a nice lunch or a drink at Gostilna pri izviru Hublja

Good to know

  • Always check the restaurant's current opening hours. Especially during the summer months, they may be closed for holidays or open more frequently.
  • Parking is available at the Gostilna and at the bridge, where you have a beautiful view of the water coming out of the mountain.
  • You can also park a lot lower and walk up along the Hubelj. You also have a water point there and place to wash your MTB after your downhill track. You can do so here.
  • The starting point of the hiking trail is about 17 km from our house.
