Let’s start with a short history of the castle and the location of Restaurant Grad Kromberk: Grad Kromberg. Count Henry of Dornberk built a castle on this site in the first half of the 13th century. Unfortunately, the original castle burned down during World War I. In 1936, the Cornonini family began rebuilding the castle, but it burned down again during World War II. After the war, the family began renovating it again, and since 1954, the Regional Museum Goriški muzej has been housed in the castle. The museum has carried out several renovation works to restore the castle to its original glory.
Nowadays you can walk in the surrounding garden and besides the permanent exhibitions they also have changing exhibitions. They also organize events, so be sure to check out the website of the museum. But besides a cultural excursion to this museum you can also have a great meal in the restaurant of Aleš and Mateja!
Aleš cooks with the seasons and adapts the menu accordingly. So it is always a surprise what is on the menu, although local products always play the main role. Mateja provides matching wines from the Vipava valley and surrounding regions and you are spoiled for an evening as if you have known them for years. It is a special combination: dining in a castle with dishes of high culinary standard and yet the warm and homely atmosphere that makes you feel immediately at ease.
We chose the menu of small dishes with mega-fresh fish. Aleš likes to combine different flavours. One dish goes more Mediterranean, the other Asian. And then the combination of truffle with prawns... I wouldn't think of that so quickly myself, but what a good combination!
This is a restaurant to spend an entire evening for, to celebrate something together. It is not a place for a quick main course and is a bit higher priced, but as far as we are concerned the price/quality ratio is good.
Good to know
- Check the restaurant's website for current opening hours (they are not open every day).
- Always handy to call in advance to ask if there is a spot available. They speak good English.
- In the summer they have a terrace with a beautiful view.
- Dogs are allowed.
- The restaurant is 7 km away from us and easily accessible by bike or car.
